We’re almost halfway into January of 2019 and I’ve had people ask me what my resolution will be? I said, “ME and self care!”. I am a mom, wife, friend, family member…the list goes on. I love to take care of others but I also tend to put myself last. Not anymore, I plan to define 2019 as a year to learn more about self care and to take action. This year is the year to focus on YOU, me, us!! It’s a year to learn more about what self care means, how it works for ourselves and to be the best person you can be!
I’m not a life coach, therapist or professional who is trained to help though I want to share my journey of what works and doesn’t work for me. I hope you will join me! I would love to know what is working for you, your friend or your mama.
What Do I Already Know About Myself?
To get started, I ask myself what do I already know about myself? I want to define what I know so I can fulfill the areas of concern in my life. You can make a list or just think about what you know. Here is my list of the positive and negative things I know about myself:
- I’m an extrovert who enjoys good amounts of the good energy from others but I also know that I need alone time to recharge. I’m an empath, you can look it up!
- I feel replenished by nature. Just being outside fills my soul.
- I can’t always be on the go or else I will start to fall apart and quite possibly become easily emotional over the little things.
- I have a huge heart with tendencies to give too much and put myself last.
- I like a subtle level of organization. Organization makes me feel structured, safe and secure. lol! It does.
Can you relate to any of these areas? I bet you can or know someone who can relate. This is where the beauty of self care kicks in.
What is Self Care?
If you were to Google self care, here is the definition: “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress“.
There are 6 different areas that make up self care, Olga Phoenix Project has a great visual: Personal, Spiritual, Emotional, Psychological, Physical, and Professional.
Over the past 4 years, I have been on a journey learning about where I’ve been and how that has defined who I am, and where I want to go in life. I’ve seen a counselor who is amazing, I have learned to meditate and listen to life-improving books driving to and from work.
